Holiday Sequins

 It's no secret that the holiday season brings with it lots of events that require dressier looks. While the wedding invites may be fewer, there are family parties, work events and visiting friends. I have been creeping on a few dresses from different designers and brands that I am particularly fond of, but also wanted to take the opportunity to get a little creative as well. I saw this dress from ASOS on Blair from Atlantic-Pacific and became obsessed with the vibrant sequins and the green color palette. Turns out I had a very similar teal silk fabric just sitting around in my sewing stash and decided to create a similar version of my own, just cause why not. A few clicks on Cartwright's Sequins and I was in business.

A few months ago I bought a pair of red heels from Forever 21 with the intention of turning them into a special pair of my own with ruffled silk rosettes. I had done a similar technique before and wanted to revisit for a new pair of shoes. While I knew what I was doing, I wanted to test the technique on a cheap pair of shoes rather than a pricey pair. After initially posting about the shoes here, I finally got around to actually wearing them!

Red Ruffle Heels

If you follow me on Instagram (@emilykfarina) you may have seen that I did a fancy little DIY project lately that involved a pair of Forever21 shoes and a whole lot of ruffled silk.

The technique I used was not a new one, but rather a shoe-decorating method I had employed for my senior fashion collection at Cornell. I had seen a pair of designer shoes recently that had chiffon rosettes all over them. Immediately I thought "I can do that. I'm going to do that". So I found an affordable pair of heels (in case it didn't turn out so well, minimal loss) and hit up Mood Fabrics for a little silk crepe de chine. Rather than go for some boring color like black, I went for red. Bright red.

“Marble” Bedside Table

When I was preparing to pack my apartment contents for our move, I took a good look at the furniture I currently had and decided which items to keep and which to replace. My bedside table was originally one of the items on the ‘give away/sell/trash’ list. I had purchased it a few years ago from Ikea, it was nothing special but did the job. 

Tassels

 

I've been a little tassel-crazy lately, no matter what kind of jewelry they are on, I'm into it. While I was in Marrakech a few months ago we stumbled upon a jewelry and bead store. Needless to say I had a hard time walking away without everything they had. A few things I picked up however included bright, neon tassels and colorful glass beads. 

After getting back to DC I decided to use the tassels and beads to make a few different bracelets and a necklace. I had purchased a long strand of these brown seed-looking beads a few years ago, which I cut up and used for two bracelets and necklace.

On my recent my trip to Costa Rica all these items were on heavy rotation. Check out the necklace in the bottom on the post!

Glam Jars

I was checking out the Michael's craft store website recently, something I do when I need some crafty inspiration, and I saw this glass jar project.

I created this shirt the other day, using a similar technique to the previously posted grey one. This coral top features vertical ruffles down the outer edges of the front.

With so much on the front, the back is simpler, with a basic racerback.

I would tuck this into high waisted shorts, or jeans perhaps to give some shape. 

I would consider this a s/m if anyone is interested, I can give you specific measurements...let me know!

Latest DIY Project: Ruffled Sandals

I've been planning to create some sandals using my floral/ruffle techniques from my collection for the Cornell Design League Fashion Show. I was going to purchase a cheap pair to try it out on, however did not find quite the right shoes. This pair of GAP sandals I got somewhere a couple of years ago at a vintage store (whoever considered GAP vintage I do not know), and they have been sitting in my closet ever since. Last night while lying in bed it occurred to me they were the perfect shape for my little project. Here are the results...

the ultimate inspiration to get up and try! ps. i made this is a whole site devoted to do-it-yourself fashion, and I think wonderful motivation for many of my friends who have great ideas but don't feel confident enough in their crafting/fashion etc to try to make them happen. go for it, and I will provide guidance if need be.

Sewn Skirt and Necklaces

Sewn skirt, not sure how I feel about the color, it came out a little more sugary-baby-doll-candy colored than I expected. Necklaces are both hand-made shown with it.

handmade bib necklace

 

 

I made this necklace at the end of the semester, it's made entirely of yarn and strings sewn together, and then I added studs, beads, and embroidered pieces on top. Anyone wanna buy this off me?
