Workwear; or as close as I get to it.

First off, I am not in a field that requires a "suit" often, if ever at all. Well to be honest, I'm not in a field yet at all, but when I graduate in a few precious months. So the truth of the matter is, I cannot say I have much advice to give in that department. Many of my friends however are in careers that may call for that area of dressing (I'm so sorry about that), but after the initial interview, is there really a need for a suit everyday? I'm gonna go ahead and say for the sake of this post that, no, even at a job that does not involve fashion, you don't need to look like Hillary Clinton on a regular basis, just when they first meet you. Ok, so moving onward and upward, I picked a few looks from fashion week, that occurred just last week, for all you non-style.com'ers. While the shows were for Spring 2010, there's lots of ideas that can be translated for fall with a few tweaks. Here are my selections of a few skirt looks that could easily be created with one's existing wardrobe, be worn for work, and hopefully allow you to keep your job.First off, tee shirts. I may be going out on a metaphorical limb with this idea, but I think it could work. I know you're thinking this is way too casual, but hear me out. Rebecca Taylor went for this idea in a few looks for her collection. The blue and red skirts above are both shown with grey knit tees, for a subtle addition of casual cool. Tuck the tee into a silk skirt, patterned or solid, for a contrast of dressy and relaxed. Add a belt for additional polish, and while not pictured here, I would wear a crisp black blazer on top to finish it off. And if you're really into the accessories, as I am, try one of this seasons bedazzled necklaces, to further amp up the dressy factor and disguise the evil truth that you're actually wearing a tee shirt to work.

Secondly, spruce up a skirted outfit with some shimmer. Whether your shiny elements come from accessories, or your clothes, metallics for daytime are an unexpected way to change things up. Cynthia Steffe (far left), showed what perhaps may be somewhat of a forward look, (hey I'm gonna push you past your fashion comfort zone cause I care), but is right on trend this season. The metallic skirt is balanced with a simple white top, perhaps a button down could work here, or a simple silk shell, both of which are probably already in your closet. Once again the ubiquitous blazer works here to add a corporate element. Tory Burch (third from left), went for metallics as well, this time on a grey tank. Styled with a silk skirt, and chunky knit sweater in the same color palette, the grey combo creates a great transition into fall.

There it is, I did what I could for work wear. It really is not my for-tay and this may be a bit disappointing to those who were expecting a Theory suit to be showcased (you really should know me better than that). So I've also included a few items that could fit into someones suit wardrobe, if they absolutely must wear one, that will add some fashion spunk without being too out-there. I accept defeat on this one, but I'm quite proud to have never tried on, worn, or bought a suit. Yet. Fingers crossed.
Bedazzled Flats: Comfy enough to wear all day, yet still add some pizazz.

Animal Print Belt: Believe it or not matches with everything.

Bold Metallic Necklace: Easily dresses up an outfit from a tee shirt to a cocktail dress.

Heel: Not too high, bow adds a feminine touch.

Patterned tights: A subtle rib never hurt anyone.

Happy Working!

  1. Ok, I think you've made some good points about snazzing up a t-shirt with accessaries, and the way you wear it (tucked in), but I have to say that the majority of those looks are NOT work appropriate. Working at a theatre, I'd say our dress code is much more liberal than a bank or something, but those skirts are like 6 inches above the knees and would raise even higher when you sit down. I know I'm being knit-picky and you were trying to show an overall style and you could just find skirts that are a bit longer, but I just had to put it out there.
