We decided to take advantage of Labor Day Weekend this summer and plan a trip to the West Coast. We used San Francisco as our base - a few days in the city, then head to Napa & Big Sur and end with a weekend at a friend’s lake house. It was so nice to get away from the hot, humid weather in New York and explore some new cities and see some amazing natural landscapes. We started our trip with a weekend in San Francisco where we have many college friends currently residing.
I heard about Mr. Holmes Bakehouse through social media (the neon lettering and cheeky saying are basically made for Instagram) and had seen images of the delicious-looking cruffins (croissant-muffin mix). Our first morning in San Francisco we took advantage of our jet lag and headed over to Mr. Holmes early. We picked up some coffee from Philz on our way, assuming we would need to wait. The line looked long at first but it went quickly. My verdict – the cruffins were good but I’ll take a cronut any day.
Like every other American female born in the late 80’s, I was a big Full House fan growing up. I had seen the Painted Ladies the last time I was in San Francisco, but I wanted to relive the opening credits again while standing in front of the famous Tanner household. Unfortunately Alamo Square was totally ripped up and under construction so we couldn’t sit in the park, but we did take some pictures of the beautiful homes anyway (and a few Snapchat videos with the Full House opening credits included).
Neither Jeff nor I had been to Alcatraz, so we made sure to
get a visit on our agenda while in town. We didn’t book quite early enough to
get the nighttime tour, but were able to get tickets for the afternoon on
Sunday. The prison audio tour has actually won multiple awards and was super
interesting to listen to. While the storied past of the prison is a little
grim, the island itself was quite lovely.
Other SF hits we enjoyed on our trip:
Rosamund – An array of unique sausages that you can
customize with your favorite toppings. We got our order to go and brought it
next door to Toronado to eat.
Tartine Manufactory – We got lunch here with a few of our
friends and were pleasantly surprised with how tasty their simple sandwiches
are.
Philz Coffee – Apparently Philz is pretty ubiquitous amongst
the hip SF set, but us noobs had never had it. We ended up getting their mint
mojito and mocha Tesoro multiple times over the course of the weekend since it was
that good.
Laconda – A small and understated Italian spot, we got
dinner here with friends and all loved our pasta dishes.
