Flares.

Merry Day After Christmas Everyone!

Now that I have some time off from school I can continue my blog posts which have taken an unintended sabbatical lately.

Currently on my mind is flared denim. This bottom style has actually been on my mind for awhile now. Some may say that flares have gone the way of the macrame halter or the cropped baby-doll tee (ie. it's never coming back, get over it), but I beg to differ. Why should this denim shape be any different than the skinny, the straight-leg or the boyfriend fit? It is merely another jeans style that suits some body types better than others, furthermore, depending upon what it is paired with not only looks far from the 70's staple, but dare I say, looks more modern than the denim trends of late. The key to the flare is keeping proportions in mind and staying away from tops that look 'vintage' or too oversize. Opt instead for a modern top-half, be it a silk blouse, boyfriend blazer or fur vest. Keeping the top crisp and pulled together prevents the look from verging on retro or hippy.

Blessed with a lack of height, I am particularly a fan of flares as they can make the shortest of legs appear lengthy and lean (case in point: Wendy, from Wendy's Lookbook third from the right in the image below, is only 5 ft. tall- see, they're flattering!). The right fit is fitted through the hip, nips in perfectly at the knee and grazes the ground while wearing heels. These are not one of those styles that work with flats and heels alike- you need the heels here. (And while we're on the subject, by heels I prefer wedges or a substantial heel with flares, stilettos are too puny).

If you're up for the flares, unfortunately my fervor has not caught on with the rest of the fashioncommunity and they are not as easy to find as the skinny jean. But here are some places you can find a pair if you are so inclined:
